The Days Before The Cross

When considering the days leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, I am often overwhelmed and in awe of the range of emotions that Jesus Christ endured. Think through this a minute with me.

1. The Passover supper with his disciples when he informed them that he would be crucified, spilling out his blood for the sins of man.

2. The love that he must've felt for his disciples as he ate that last Passover meal with them.

3. The knowledge that one of his close and beloved followers would betray him for mere silver.

4. Prediction of Peter's denial is an honest depiction of Peter's weakness, and also helping him see his need of the Holy Spirit to guide his life.

5. The garden of Gethsemane were Jesus prayed to God the father that the upcoming events that were planned from the beginning of eternity for him be taken away.

6. That same prayer for Jesus submitted to the will of the father that he lay down his life for the sins of man.

7. Standing in the garden as he was betrayed by Judas and watching his disciples flee in fear as he took steps by allowing himself to be arrested and led off to be crucified knowing it was the will of his Father.

8. Watching his prophecy of Peter's denial come true absorbing the hurt while knowing it would eventually build Peter’s faith. Then watching Peter weep bitterly, as he reconciled and resolved the gaps in his faith that had been exposed.

9. Being led before the Sanhedrin, who claimed to be the very experts in the word of God that he himself was the manifestation of, condemn Him to die.

10. Showing the strength to stand silently before his accusers, the very people he created, and the very people he was set to die for.

The strength of our Lord Jesus Christ, is displayed brilliantly and radiantly in the scriptures depicting his last week. Knowing he had the power of all creation is fingertips, and yet exercising restraint in the face of obvious betrayal. Looking at those condemning him, and proclaiming themselves to be experts in the word of God, knowing it was for them to he was sacrificing his life.

You see the week ahead was a depiction of the depravity of man compared to the Majesty of God. It was the greatest display of trust in the heavenly father for the purpose he had sent Jesus Christ to accomplish.

John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.” That message clearly defines Jesus Christ’s walk during the week ahead. Only God’s love could have endured a week like this.

Take time this week as we approach Easter to consider when Christ endured for you, anything through what he must've felt for you as he willingly walked in God's will to the cross on Calvary.

And remember this week, in the words of a great preacher once said “it may be Friday, but Sunday is a comin’” He died, was buried, and rose again for you.

Prayer – The Vital Communication Connection

[18] And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

The final verse describing the armor of God is perhaps the most important element in the armor of God. You see God has asked us as his children to call unto him and every circumstance and he has expressed us his desire to hear our prayers and to answer them. When Jesus Christ returned to heaven, in the witness of all his disciples, he promised that he would send his Holy Spirit, and that is Holy Spirit would guide and minister to the followers of Jesus Christ. I suspect when we meet Jesus Christ face to face, we will begin to see all the prayers that God has answered for his children that were offered in faith, we will be overwhelmed with his attention to every detail in our life, and in fact in the whole world.

The apostle Paul understood the need for prayer very well as he penned the verses surrounding the armor of God. He had been imprisoned, he been beaten, he had been run out of town, and yet he knew that his life was completely in the hands of God. One of the verses that Paul wrote to the Philippians, was in chapter 4 verse six, where he wrote “in everything by prayer and supplication let your requests be made known unto God and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

You see God wants us to be connected and alert. He wants us to walk in faith. He wants us to trust his hand in our life. He rejoices when we come to him boldly and layer hearts open before him and express our deepest desires to Him.

God really does answer prayer. Jeremiah 33 : 3 says “Call to me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. “

One of the greatest things we can learn about prayer, is that when we listen to God having express our hearts to him, he begins to show himself to us in ways we could never imagine. Satan likes to throw many darts at us that would keep us from our intimate praying relationship with our Lord. The dart of unworthiness, the dart of doubt, the dart of deception, the dart of urgency, the dart pride , and many other detractors that would keep our focus away from our provider and Savior.

As I write this last section about the armor of God, it dawns on me that prayer to the faithful and loving God is the glue that keeps our armor intact and functioning throughout our lives. Paul challenges us not only to be on the lookout for darts and attacks on our own spiritual stability and well-being but also to those of our loved ones and extended family in the body of Christ. “With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”

Jesus set an example for us to follow in prayer that is full of wisdom and teaching. In Matthew 6, during the sermon on the mount, Jesus taught great things on Prayer.

5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9"This, then, is how you should pray:
" 'Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
11Give us today our daily bread.
12Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.[a]' 14For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Just think….

We call God our Father in heaven…… A very intimate personal approach to God in a very special place.

We see his Holiness (Hallowed be thy name) ……… We acknowledge his abiding holiness and perfection

Your Kingdom come ……… we are on earth where things are not perfect, awaiting his perfect return,

Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven .... Our humble striving for His way now… In our lives.. knowing he will return..

Give us this day our daily bread …. Our acknowledgement of God’s providing hand, as well as begin grateful for what we have been given today…. This is the spirit of contentment and thankfulness.

Forgive us our debts ….. The recognition of our condition without the gift of forgiveness from God. The please before God to see us through the sacrifice of His Son for our sins. The humble beginning place of our walk with God.

As We Also Forgive our Debtors …. This is the tough one… Our nature is not to forgive people for wrong doing against us, and yet it is in the teaching of how God taught us to pray… When you think about it, this is probably the biggest key to prayer yet… For God to help our humility and grace to forgive what has been done against us….

And lead us not into temptation …. A recognition actually that God never tempts us with sin.. He leads us away from sin. Our natural desire is to sin, and we must be empowered by God to be delivered from those desires and tendencies. It is so good to know that God leads us in everlasting ways that have foundation for our life and success.

But deliver us from the evil one ….. The hope that God will spare us from the consequences of evil and evil one around us. The biggest consequence he can spare us from is bitterness in our heart and mind that stems from wrongs done against us, or those we love. Pray this often … Spiritual vitality is at stake.

Keeping Your Mind and Heart Sharp in the Battles of Life (The Helmet and the Sword)

Ephesians 6:17
[17] Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Soldiers are given head gear in to protect their mind for battle. Can you imagine going to battle without something to cover your head and shield it from any attack. Soldiers are also given weapons to fight the enemy and defeat them. Without such equipment, the outcomes of battles would be hopeless.

When I think of the Helmet of Salvation, I think of that mindset of keeping your wits about you in the battles of life. Getting emotions ahead of thinking can often be the downfall of a person in a tough situation. God has given his promise of eternal life (Salvation from our sinful self) as a reminder that our outcome is secure. We can lay aside every worry (Philippians 4:6) and pray to God, so that we have the right approach to fight our battles. This promise is designed to protect your mental state of mind with the promise of eternity. Our Helmet of Salvation is designed for bringing us peace of mind, and allowing us to keep a state of mind, so as to hear clearly the voice of our Lord.

The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. 2 Timothy 2:15 says “Study to show thyself approved, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, and correctly handles the word of truth” (Paraphrase).

2 Timothy 3:16,17 says “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly furnished for all good works”

Simply put, our sword in battle is the Bible. God’s message to us. When we read God’s word regularly, and take in its message, God is able to speak to us through his Word, and give us guidance in each and every step we take. I have some personal favorite promises in the scriptures that remind me of the power of God’s word for my life. To commit verses to memory is to prepare your mind to respond to God’s voice as various battles come your way. Take some time to look them up and consider some of them .

Joshua 1:8 Psalm 1:1-6
Psalm 119:9-11 Psalm 119:105
John 1:1-12 Psalm 19:7-14
Hebrews 4:12

The incredible thing about God’s word, is that it is designed to defeat Satan’s darts that are thrown at us every day. When Jesus was being tempted by Satan during his walk on earth, he would always combat the temptations with the statement referring to Scriptures that said “It is written”. The one that really rings home to me in this writing is “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God”.
When people ask me, “How do I know what God’s will is for me? Or how can I make the best decision about something” I always respond, What does God’s word say about this to you ? The reason for that response is simple… God’s word discerns the thoughts and intentions of a man’s heart. God always leads in step with his written word applied to our every day life. Knowing this eliminates a lot of potentially bad choices.

I will close with this verse for the week :

Hebrews 4:12 – “For the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword.. Piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of joint and marrow, and is a discern-er of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

May your week be filled with the peace of mind that comes from the knowledge of God’s Salvation for you. And may your mind be sharpened as you walk with your Lord in his word this week.

In Honor of the “Warrior of Hope”

(NIV) Ephesians 6:16
[16] In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

It is with great sadness as I pick up the tools to write with this week. In this past week, this world lost a very great man and carrier of the Gospel of Peace, who in his eulogy was referred to as the “Warrior of Hope”. Craig was a close friend during our days in Wichita, Kansas and we shared many times encouraging one another, praying for others, sharing Christ, and growing. Craig carried the deep hope of the gospel to anyone he met. Last week’s devotional, and this week’s very much reflect the man lost in Craig, as he passed on way too early to join his Savior in heaven. John 14 : 1 – 6 Jesus promises that he has gone to prepare a place for us, so that one day we can be with him in heaven… Craig has realized that day.

Few people wear the armor of God to the extent it was intended to lead a productive life in Christ. Many times we are partially equipped to take on life’s battles, but we forget provisions in our armor that God knew we would need to fight productively. The Shield of Faith is often one of those items we regularly need, but forget to use. The words “Shield of Faith” are also filled with meaning for us to unfold and understand. You see, God chose to use the word Shield because in His wisdom, he knew that life would be coming at us, and that there would be a whole host of circumstances, feelings, situations that Satan would like to bring us down with. The Shield was there to knock these things down from getting through, so that we could continue to stand strong in battle and be a protector of ourselves and those around us.

I loved the scene in the Mel Gibson movie “Brave heart” that showed the commoners all grouped together with their shields in the air deflecting the onslaught of arrows from the huge army that was pounding down on them. Without the shields, they would have gone down quickly, but instead withstood the attack, and as a group continued to win the battle. As the battle raged on, those same shields that protected the soldiers from the attack, became the front line defense for their advancements against the enemy as well. God wants us to both defend and win our battles against what is thrown at us in this life.

Satan’s arrows come from many directions. Arrows like doubt of God’s love, Fear of tomorrow, questions about your future, worries about your job, hopelessness in seeing the condition of the world, and many more shots that would cause you to lose sight of God’s eternal promises. And that is what God’s shield for your spiritual well being is made up with. “FAITH”.

So what is this faith made of that can withstand all of the onslaughts of “fiery darts” that are thrown our way ?
1. Faith must have an object on which to be based….
The faith described here is based on the promises of God. Promises like :
a. “I will never leave you or forsake you”
b. “I go to prepare a place for you….”
c. “In everything by prayer and supplication make your requests be made known unto God, and the peace of God will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.
2. Faith must be based on something worthy of trust…
a. If you have faith in something or someone who is not trustworthy, or if you have faith in principals that cannot hold up, your faith will result in a disappointing end.
b. If you have faith in a God who created you, loves you, and made you holy by his sacrifice, your faith will hold. Your house will stand.
3. Faith is an Action Item ….
a. Faith is something that steps out in trust to take action for change.
- Consider the young boy who offered his lunch in faith, to then watch Jesus Christ feed the 5000 with it.
- The young girl Jesus brought back to life, because the father had faith.
b. Faith doesn’t always see the results immediately.
- Consider the faith of Abraham, who was promised a son, with a wife who was 90 years old..
- Consider Moses who wandered in the wilderness for 40 years before his people were brought to the Promised Land.

So as you go about this week, consider where God would have you place your faith. Where are your deepest concerns…. Lay them out to your loving heavenly Father. He hears you. He loves it when you approach Him with boldness and faith. Trust Him. And then take the time to see his eternal vision for his children.

Craig, my friend, saw that vision. He lived that way in life, until a debilitating situation took him from this life. He now has realized that eternity with Christ is real. Being a child of God is rewarding and forever.

To the family of Craig C. who is left behind… May the God of peace comfort your soul until you are reunited with your loved one… and you will be..

In memory of Craig… Thank you for being a friend to people and sharing God’s love so tirelessly through your adult life. Thank for your friendship when we lived in the same town for 12 years. Thank you for the countless people you instilled hope in by your kind ways. You will be missed until we meet again.

Jeff
