O Holy Night

O Holy Night

I have to admit that I can listen to the song " O Holy Night " at least 20 times in a row near Christmas time because of the message it brings .  Singers like Faith Hill, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Amy Grant can bring us as close as we can to that eventful night when Christ was born and his host of Angels announced it so brilliantly.

The time had come to announce the greatest gift ever.  The hope of a weary and tired world hung in the balance.  In an expression of majestic love a host of angels was sent in the night sky to the humble shepherds to declare that God was sending his only Son to make his dwelling among the people God had created.  To the common worker came the noblest and most glorious musical announcement ever to fall upon  the ears of mankind.

Set against the backdrop of a crystal clear and starry night, the Host of Angels sent from the very throne of God put on a concert of praise to the shepherds in the field.

Christ the Savior is born to you tonight  !  A hope to the nations, a gift to the humblest of men in the most difficult of places.

The words of the song speak the message best.

O Holy Night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining.
Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was born;
O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!
O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
O'er the world a star is sweetly gleaming,
Now come the wisemen from out of the Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friends.
He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in his name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
With all our hearts we praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,
His power and glory ever more proclaim!
His power and glory ever more proclaim!

Break out your favorite singer's rendition and give it a listen.   Revel in the message. You are valued by the King of the Heavens.  fall on the knees of your heart and worship him in this season.

It'll be like you were there in the fields with the Shepherds yourself.

Merry Christmas !

This Thing Called Love

Throughout the history of man, This Thing Called Love, has been written about, songs have been played, poems written, wars fought, and even lives lost in the pursuit of love, or the act of love. So what is it about love that burns so deep in the soul of human kind. And furthermore, just what is love really. Is it the emotion felt in the passion of a sweetheart relationship? Is it the result of the deep human need to be connected to others? Or is it a God given need within man that like other needs, when allowed to be filled by God, unlocks the human heart to great things in relationship to both man and God.

Significance in the soul of man can be tied directly to the impact of love, or sadly, the lack thereof.

So how do we get our arms around this thing called love, so that it rests in our hearts and soul from our Divine Creator in the manner that it was intended for?

Consider the following verses from I Corinthians 13: 1-4

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. [2] If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
[3] If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Clearly every effort of our own, every accomplishment, every gift of talent, and every gift we give lacks completeness without this characteristic of love. Pretty heavy words if you think about it. Basically saying if you did what you did without love in your heart…. What have you really accomplished ?

In the movie “Chariots of Fire” depicting the lives of two very different runners in the early century Olympics, one runner ran to express his gift of running back to God, and the fulfillment showed in every stride and struggle in the movie. The other runner ran for fear… Fear of insignificance, fear of losing, fear of not being the best and falling short. At the end of the race, the first runner finished the race smiling as he felt the “pleasure of God” in his running. It was a matter of love that drove him and the satisfaction of his running wasn’t in the win itself, but rather in the expression of his God given gift being given back to God in the best expression of his worship and love for him.

That moment in the movie seeing him wins his race in the manner he did, reflected the very nature in which God desires us to win our races here on earth. The runner could have run the same race with the same satisfaction in front of an audience of only God and been satisfied.

To give love from our heart, we must have love in our heart… And that comes from the gift of God. We must abide in God always to be full of the right kind of love to live satisfied lives.

1 John 4:16-18
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love.
Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. [17] In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. [18] There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

So as we delve into this thing called “Love”, always know that you are loved, and can realize a deep sense of love as you abide in the promises of God toward you.

Have a blessed week.

Small is Big

In reading the New Testament, I am always intrigued by the underlying story of mentoring and discipleship that was taking place throughout the chapters written in both the Gospels and in the letters of Paul. Seemingly small things were used to teach big lessons .

Jesus was constantly teaching his circle of close followers that small things mattered when bringing the message of God to people. Consider the following :

1. Zacchaeus was noticed up in a tree just observing Jesus in his walking and teaching, but Christ took the time to notice him. Christ also knew that Zacchaeus was feeling a bit shy because of his position in life as a tax collector, and his stature of being small. Jesus noticed this, and called Zacchaeus out of the tree he was hiding in, and invited himself over to his house for dinner. Honor in the small thing replaced the dishonor that Zacchaeus had felt about himself. Jesus took that small observation and taught his followers to see people from God’s viewpoint, and to understand the point of view people may have of themselves that is completely counter to the value that God places on them. Small was big. Zacchaeus then reacted in a big way and gave half his possessions to those less fortunate. The spirit inside himself was freed up because of the small favor of the King of Kings.(Luke 19:1-7)

2. The young boy who was observing the crowds standing close to Jesus, and noticing that they were hungry, offered his lunch to the Lord just to help. The disciples basically laughed, but the young boy was rewarded by the actions of Jesus when Christ turned his small lunch into feeding 5000 people that day. Once again, the disciples learned that small things are big. Jesus taught them not to overlook the faith of the small people in their circle, because God did not overlook such things. They learned that small things done with faith and good motive are seeds God works with to do big things. …… And the biggest thing to Christ at that moment was rewarding the faith of the child who was brave enough to believe.

3. When Jesus was at the temple, he saw the poor widow put in the very little she had into the gifts for the temple treasury, and made the vast contrast between what the rich had given and the small coins that quietly sank into the treasury plate, out of humility.

Luke 21: 1-4As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. [2] He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. [3] "I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others. [4] All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."

The contrasts in these stories are hard to miss. Big versus small. Seemingly insignificant, brought to the front by the creator of the universe. I was challenged reading this stories in a few of ways.

1. When we feel small, and insignificant in the things we have or contribute by our talents in any setting we find ourselves in, it does not go unnoticed. God values the gifts and abilities he has given you and cherishes it when you offer the seemingly little you have to give, with faith that through Christ, it will do much.

2. When I think of the crowd putting down Zacchaeus , Jesus saw a heart of faith ready to happen. He saw through the history and public perceptions, and took notice of an individual just hoping to get a glimpse of him. We should never feel for a moment that we are insignificant to the creator of this universe. He has noticed you, and desires fellowship with you.
Revelations 3:20 says..Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If any man hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him and he with me.

3. And last of all, sometimes the things we think we are doing that we presume are “BIG” are really not the point of what God is trying to do. The biggest work of God is in the individual’s heart, and is accomplished as that individual sees their value and places their faith in God. This is often accomplished through a series of "small" things done faithfully over time.

Often we get trapped into thinking that God wants us to push for the big numbers in our life to impress him like the wealthy in the synagogue, or the crowd following, or the reluctant disciples who o assumed a young boy with two loaves and five fishes had the answer for the day for Jesus.

I hope this week affords you an opportunity to offer God the small contributions you have to give of time, resources, or abilities, and allow Him to show you His power to do significant things in the hearts of those around you…

God Bless

"Why look for the Living among the dead ?"

Christ is Risen… He is Risen Indeed !!

I love those moments when God changes our viewpoints toward eternity and lasting hope in a life changing event. The following verses in Luke 24 reflect such a moment.

24:1 Now on the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking the aromatic spices they had prepared. 24:2 They found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb, 24:3 but when they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.24:4 While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood beside them in dazzling attire. 24:5 The women were terribly frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 24:6 He is not here, but has been raised! Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 24:7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.”24:8 then the women remembered his words, 24:9 and when they returned from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 24:10 Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles. 24:11 But these words seemed like pure nonsense to them, and they did not believe them. 24:12 But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. He bent down and saw only the strips of linen cloth; then he went home, wondering what had happened.

You see, the perspective of the cross was all scrambled up in the minds of the followers. In their hearts, the message the Christ had been giving them all along had not really sunk in.

a. He had made his claims as God’s Only Son, and in fact God.

b. He had shown them miracles of his power over sickness and death on more than one occasion.

c. He taught them heaven’s principals time and again while walking and talking with them.

d. Mary knew he was conceived of God !

But….now, they had seen him die. Even though he had told them exactly what would occur, that he would be crucified for man’s sins, and buried, only to rise again in three days, the followers of Christ were naturally lost and frightened. The whole scope of their existence was in jeopardy, and fear and concern gripped their hearts and minds. Skepticism was beginning to find it’s way in.

Then, the women visiting the tomb were conducting acts of mourning and respect for the dead, when their world was turned absolutely upside down. It took a little bit for it to sink in.. The question.. “Why do you look for the living among the dead?” was the turning point of perspective…. Their Lord and Savior, the one whom they placed their trust, had conquered death and sin… The rolled back stone, the empty tomb, the bewildered guards, the grave clothes laying in tact, were all evidence to them that indeed the Lord had risen. They ran off to tell others, their hopes again proven true, now by a Risen Lord. The remarkable appearances of Christ in the days that followed have changed the history of man forever. Many witnesses experienced first hand, the Risen Lord…. And Today we celebrate God’s power over sin and death. We celebrate our value found in Christ alone.

So today, celebrate… Rejoice from the very bottom of your heart… Sing a joyful noise unto the Lord… Raise your arms to heaven. Shout out loud your joy. Hug a neighbor or friend…Christ is risen. Christ is Risen indeed !

The reassurance we have from this event is best stated in the things that Jesus said to his disciples before he went into heaven.. Again, pointing our views eternally, and heavenward..

John 14:1-6

14:1 “Do not let your hearts be distressed. You believe in God; believe also in me. 14:2 There are many dwelling places in my Father’s house. Otherwise, I would have told you, because I am going away to make ready a place for you. 14:3 And if I go and make ready a place for you, I will come again and take you to be with me, so that where I am you may be too. 14:4 And you know the way where I am going.”14:5 Thomas said, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 14:6 Jesus replied, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Christ is Risen..

He is Risen Indeed.

Happy Easter and God Bless.

The Cost of My Sin, The Purchase of my Redemption

I stared at the crowd in front of Pilate
As Jesus, silent, before him stood.
There rang out cries from the angry brood. "Crucify Him, Crucify Him"

This I knew was the cost of my sin.

" Give us Barabus, please let him go, but kill the one who made us
whole. Please just kill the one who made us whole."

The cries of the crowd were barely done, when I. saw the crude crown
on his head was placed, causing a crimson flow down his face.

This I knew was the cost of my sin.

Much to my breaking heart, I saw the whips tear his back apart.
The beating continued until he barely stood, the ground below mixed
with mud, sweat, and blood.

This I knew was the cost of my sin.

Then came the cross, they demanded him to carry, up a steep hill, they
called it Calvary. With thorns on his head, blurring his sight, scars
on his back stealing his might, his steps became slow, so I stepped
into help.

This I knew was the cost of my sin.

The heart of this man, found guilty of love, was clearly a divine gift
sent from above. As I carried his cross up the hill that day, hearing
the mocking crowd on the way... I saw in his eyes a resolve with
great strength.

This I knew was the cost of my sin.

When we reached the top of Calvary that day, I watched and winced as
they pounded with nails, his hands and feet to therugged cross.

This I knew was the cost of my sin.

When the pounding was finished they hoisted them up, each nailed to a cross... A thief on each side paying for their personal crimes
To deepen the betrayal, the Lord of the universe, hung in the
middle, paying for my sins and the sins of the world.

I listened with wonder as I heard Christ comfort the thief who understood
his own crime. With authority and love he assured the man, that soon
he would join Christ in heaven forever.

And as the day grew closer to dusk, I heard the King of Kings cry up to His Father in heaven " My God, My God Why have you forsaken me? ". And then with
relief in His voice said "It is finished" and he died.

It was then I realized this was
this was the Purchase of my Redemption!
The Purchase of my Redemption!
The Purchase of my Redemption!

A soldier said, when seeing Christ's grace on the cross "surely, oh
surely this was the Son of God "

They carried him off on the cross, and wrapped his body in burial cloth and embalming “spices”. And laid his body in the
tomb. Soldiers of strength were set at the opening of the tomb, to guard with their lives this
King of Kings who claimed equality with God.

They wee determined to silence the faithful few, who were told by
Christ he would rise again to eternal life. They wanted the proof that Jesus had
died, to end once, and to silence all the claims he had made.

The skies of the world grew dark for three days; the battle of heaven
against sin was ablaze. The veil of the holy temple tore from the top
removing the barrier of direct access to God once and for all..

The Purchase of my Redemption
The Purchase of my Redemption

So now we wait. Would he conquer the grip of sin in our lives? Would
he end forever my condemnation?

It is Friday, But Sunday is a comin!

The Days Before The Cross

When considering the days leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, I am often overwhelmed and in awe of the range of emotions that Jesus Christ endured. Think through this a minute with me.

1. The Passover supper with his disciples when he informed them that he would be crucified, spilling out his blood for the sins of man.

2. The love that he must've felt for his disciples as he ate that last Passover meal with them.

3. The knowledge that one of his close and beloved followers would betray him for mere silver.

4. Prediction of Peter's denial is an honest depiction of Peter's weakness, and also helping him see his need of the Holy Spirit to guide his life.

5. The garden of Gethsemane were Jesus prayed to God the father that the upcoming events that were planned from the beginning of eternity for him be taken away.

6. That same prayer for Jesus submitted to the will of the father that he lay down his life for the sins of man.

7. Standing in the garden as he was betrayed by Judas and watching his disciples flee in fear as he took steps by allowing himself to be arrested and led off to be crucified knowing it was the will of his Father.

8. Watching his prophecy of Peter's denial come true absorbing the hurt while knowing it would eventually build Peter’s faith. Then watching Peter weep bitterly, as he reconciled and resolved the gaps in his faith that had been exposed.

9. Being led before the Sanhedrin, who claimed to be the very experts in the word of God that he himself was the manifestation of, condemn Him to die.

10. Showing the strength to stand silently before his accusers, the very people he created, and the very people he was set to die for.

The strength of our Lord Jesus Christ, is displayed brilliantly and radiantly in the scriptures depicting his last week. Knowing he had the power of all creation is fingertips, and yet exercising restraint in the face of obvious betrayal. Looking at those condemning him, and proclaiming themselves to be experts in the word of God, knowing it was for them to he was sacrificing his life.

You see the week ahead was a depiction of the depravity of man compared to the Majesty of God. It was the greatest display of trust in the heavenly father for the purpose he had sent Jesus Christ to accomplish.

John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.” That message clearly defines Jesus Christ’s walk during the week ahead. Only God’s love could have endured a week like this.

Take time this week as we approach Easter to consider when Christ endured for you, anything through what he must've felt for you as he willingly walked in God's will to the cross on Calvary.

And remember this week, in the words of a great preacher once said “it may be Friday, but Sunday is a comin’” He died, was buried, and rose again for you.

Prayer – The Vital Communication Connection

[18] And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

The final verse describing the armor of God is perhaps the most important element in the armor of God. You see God has asked us as his children to call unto him and every circumstance and he has expressed us his desire to hear our prayers and to answer them. When Jesus Christ returned to heaven, in the witness of all his disciples, he promised that he would send his Holy Spirit, and that is Holy Spirit would guide and minister to the followers of Jesus Christ. I suspect when we meet Jesus Christ face to face, we will begin to see all the prayers that God has answered for his children that were offered in faith, we will be overwhelmed with his attention to every detail in our life, and in fact in the whole world.

The apostle Paul understood the need for prayer very well as he penned the verses surrounding the armor of God. He had been imprisoned, he been beaten, he had been run out of town, and yet he knew that his life was completely in the hands of God. One of the verses that Paul wrote to the Philippians, was in chapter 4 verse six, where he wrote “in everything by prayer and supplication let your requests be made known unto God and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

You see God wants us to be connected and alert. He wants us to walk in faith. He wants us to trust his hand in our life. He rejoices when we come to him boldly and layer hearts open before him and express our deepest desires to Him.

God really does answer prayer. Jeremiah 33 : 3 says “Call to me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. “

One of the greatest things we can learn about prayer, is that when we listen to God having express our hearts to him, he begins to show himself to us in ways we could never imagine. Satan likes to throw many darts at us that would keep us from our intimate praying relationship with our Lord. The dart of unworthiness, the dart of doubt, the dart of deception, the dart of urgency, the dart pride , and many other detractors that would keep our focus away from our provider and Savior.

As I write this last section about the armor of God, it dawns on me that prayer to the faithful and loving God is the glue that keeps our armor intact and functioning throughout our lives. Paul challenges us not only to be on the lookout for darts and attacks on our own spiritual stability and well-being but also to those of our loved ones and extended family in the body of Christ. “With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”

Jesus set an example for us to follow in prayer that is full of wisdom and teaching. In Matthew 6, during the sermon on the mount, Jesus taught great things on Prayer.

5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9"This, then, is how you should pray:
" 'Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
11Give us today our daily bread.
12Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.[a]' 14For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Just think….

We call God our Father in heaven…… A very intimate personal approach to God in a very special place.

We see his Holiness (Hallowed be thy name) ……… We acknowledge his abiding holiness and perfection

Your Kingdom come ……… we are on earth where things are not perfect, awaiting his perfect return,

Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven .... Our humble striving for His way now… In our lives.. knowing he will return..

Give us this day our daily bread …. Our acknowledgement of God’s providing hand, as well as begin grateful for what we have been given today…. This is the spirit of contentment and thankfulness.

Forgive us our debts ….. The recognition of our condition without the gift of forgiveness from God. The please before God to see us through the sacrifice of His Son for our sins. The humble beginning place of our walk with God.

As We Also Forgive our Debtors …. This is the tough one… Our nature is not to forgive people for wrong doing against us, and yet it is in the teaching of how God taught us to pray… When you think about it, this is probably the biggest key to prayer yet… For God to help our humility and grace to forgive what has been done against us….

And lead us not into temptation …. A recognition actually that God never tempts us with sin.. He leads us away from sin. Our natural desire is to sin, and we must be empowered by God to be delivered from those desires and tendencies. It is so good to know that God leads us in everlasting ways that have foundation for our life and success.

But deliver us from the evil one ….. The hope that God will spare us from the consequences of evil and evil one around us. The biggest consequence he can spare us from is bitterness in our heart and mind that stems from wrongs done against us, or those we love. Pray this often … Spiritual vitality is at stake.

Keeping Your Mind and Heart Sharp in the Battles of Life (The Helmet and the Sword)

Ephesians 6:17
[17] Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Soldiers are given head gear in to protect their mind for battle. Can you imagine going to battle without something to cover your head and shield it from any attack. Soldiers are also given weapons to fight the enemy and defeat them. Without such equipment, the outcomes of battles would be hopeless.

When I think of the Helmet of Salvation, I think of that mindset of keeping your wits about you in the battles of life. Getting emotions ahead of thinking can often be the downfall of a person in a tough situation. God has given his promise of eternal life (Salvation from our sinful self) as a reminder that our outcome is secure. We can lay aside every worry (Philippians 4:6) and pray to God, so that we have the right approach to fight our battles. This promise is designed to protect your mental state of mind with the promise of eternity. Our Helmet of Salvation is designed for bringing us peace of mind, and allowing us to keep a state of mind, so as to hear clearly the voice of our Lord.

The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. 2 Timothy 2:15 says “Study to show thyself approved, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, and correctly handles the word of truth” (Paraphrase).

2 Timothy 3:16,17 says “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly furnished for all good works”

Simply put, our sword in battle is the Bible. God’s message to us. When we read God’s word regularly, and take in its message, God is able to speak to us through his Word, and give us guidance in each and every step we take. I have some personal favorite promises in the scriptures that remind me of the power of God’s word for my life. To commit verses to memory is to prepare your mind to respond to God’s voice as various battles come your way. Take some time to look them up and consider some of them .

Joshua 1:8 Psalm 1:1-6
Psalm 119:9-11 Psalm 119:105
John 1:1-12 Psalm 19:7-14
Hebrews 4:12

The incredible thing about God’s word, is that it is designed to defeat Satan’s darts that are thrown at us every day. When Jesus was being tempted by Satan during his walk on earth, he would always combat the temptations with the statement referring to Scriptures that said “It is written”. The one that really rings home to me in this writing is “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God”.
When people ask me, “How do I know what God’s will is for me? Or how can I make the best decision about something” I always respond, What does God’s word say about this to you ? The reason for that response is simple… God’s word discerns the thoughts and intentions of a man’s heart. God always leads in step with his written word applied to our every day life. Knowing this eliminates a lot of potentially bad choices.

I will close with this verse for the week :

Hebrews 4:12 – “For the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword.. Piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of joint and marrow, and is a discern-er of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

May your week be filled with the peace of mind that comes from the knowledge of God’s Salvation for you. And may your mind be sharpened as you walk with your Lord in his word this week.

In Honor of the “Warrior of Hope”

(NIV) Ephesians 6:16
[16] In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

It is with great sadness as I pick up the tools to write with this week. In this past week, this world lost a very great man and carrier of the Gospel of Peace, who in his eulogy was referred to as the “Warrior of Hope”. Craig was a close friend during our days in Wichita, Kansas and we shared many times encouraging one another, praying for others, sharing Christ, and growing. Craig carried the deep hope of the gospel to anyone he met. Last week’s devotional, and this week’s very much reflect the man lost in Craig, as he passed on way too early to join his Savior in heaven. John 14 : 1 – 6 Jesus promises that he has gone to prepare a place for us, so that one day we can be with him in heaven… Craig has realized that day.

Few people wear the armor of God to the extent it was intended to lead a productive life in Christ. Many times we are partially equipped to take on life’s battles, but we forget provisions in our armor that God knew we would need to fight productively. The Shield of Faith is often one of those items we regularly need, but forget to use. The words “Shield of Faith” are also filled with meaning for us to unfold and understand. You see, God chose to use the word Shield because in His wisdom, he knew that life would be coming at us, and that there would be a whole host of circumstances, feelings, situations that Satan would like to bring us down with. The Shield was there to knock these things down from getting through, so that we could continue to stand strong in battle and be a protector of ourselves and those around us.

I loved the scene in the Mel Gibson movie “Brave heart” that showed the commoners all grouped together with their shields in the air deflecting the onslaught of arrows from the huge army that was pounding down on them. Without the shields, they would have gone down quickly, but instead withstood the attack, and as a group continued to win the battle. As the battle raged on, those same shields that protected the soldiers from the attack, became the front line defense for their advancements against the enemy as well. God wants us to both defend and win our battles against what is thrown at us in this life.

Satan’s arrows come from many directions. Arrows like doubt of God’s love, Fear of tomorrow, questions about your future, worries about your job, hopelessness in seeing the condition of the world, and many more shots that would cause you to lose sight of God’s eternal promises. And that is what God’s shield for your spiritual well being is made up with. “FAITH”.

So what is this faith made of that can withstand all of the onslaughts of “fiery darts” that are thrown our way ?
1. Faith must have an object on which to be based….
The faith described here is based on the promises of God. Promises like :
a. “I will never leave you or forsake you”
b. “I go to prepare a place for you….”
c. “In everything by prayer and supplication make your requests be made known unto God, and the peace of God will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.
2. Faith must be based on something worthy of trust…
a. If you have faith in something or someone who is not trustworthy, or if you have faith in principals that cannot hold up, your faith will result in a disappointing end.
b. If you have faith in a God who created you, loves you, and made you holy by his sacrifice, your faith will hold. Your house will stand.
3. Faith is an Action Item ….
a. Faith is something that steps out in trust to take action for change.
- Consider the young boy who offered his lunch in faith, to then watch Jesus Christ feed the 5000 with it.
- The young girl Jesus brought back to life, because the father had faith.
b. Faith doesn’t always see the results immediately.
- Consider the faith of Abraham, who was promised a son, with a wife who was 90 years old..
- Consider Moses who wandered in the wilderness for 40 years before his people were brought to the Promised Land.

So as you go about this week, consider where God would have you place your faith. Where are your deepest concerns…. Lay them out to your loving heavenly Father. He hears you. He loves it when you approach Him with boldness and faith. Trust Him. And then take the time to see his eternal vision for his children.

Craig, my friend, saw that vision. He lived that way in life, until a debilitating situation took him from this life. He now has realized that eternity with Christ is real. Being a child of God is rewarding and forever.

To the family of Craig C. who is left behind… May the God of peace comfort your soul until you are reunited with your loved one… and you will be..

In memory of Craig… Thank you for being a friend to people and sharing God’s love so tirelessly through your adult life. Thank for your friendship when we lived in the same town for 12 years. Thank you for the countless people you instilled hope in by your kind ways. You will be missed until we meet again.

Getting The Right Shoes for the Job !!

(NIV) Ephesians 6:15
[15] and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

Mobility is the lifeblood of a soldier. The mission of the soldier directs his feet in the path that works toward his most important goal of defending his cause and winning the battle. Protecting the feet, enabling the feet, and making sure that they are equipped with the best of apparel to meet the challenges before them. When a soldier needs to move to accomplish a task, they cannot be worried about how well their shoes will hold up, or if they will have a problem with them.

Can you imagine a football player taking the field without cleats, but rather with dress shoes ? Or how about a Basketball player who decided to wear cleats instead of tennis shoes ? I think you get the picture. Without the feet fitted with the proper attire for the goal in mind, the outcomes are less than desirable.

As you consider the statement by Paul in Ephesians 6:15 (Above) he recognized that the key to our spiritual mobility was the fundamental message of the Gospel of Peace solidly locked in mind, thus allowing our feet to move when needed. The truth of the message we act on enables us to move through our spiritual battles with confidence and readiness.

So in life, what makes us ready? What battles are the greatest battles we face that should cause our feet to move?

The very core message here, is we spiritually battle for all things that would distract from the message of the Gospel… That Jesus Christ died for our sins, and brought us peace with God. That is what should move our feet in any situation…

What would bring ultimate peace… What will ultimately resolve conflict…. And if you think about it, that is what a good soldier is all about.

Matthew 5:9 says “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the sons of God”

James 3:17, 18 Says “But wisdom that comes from heaven is first of pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace, raise a harvest of righteousness.

So, be equipped with the right “Shoes” for the right battle. Feet carrying the knowledge of the Simple, Life-Changing, Freedom Giving, Gospel of Peace.

May God richly bless your week.

The Armor of God – The Breastplate of Righteousness…. Because the heart of the matter is the matter of the heart !

(NIV) Ephesians 6:14
Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place.

The small phrase “with the breastplate of righteousness in place” is one of those phrases in the scriptures that is packed with significance for God’s people. A breastplate is the piece of a warrior’s armor that protects the very life blood and heart of the soldier. A breastplate had to be made from the strongest metal to deflect any direct attack from the enemy that got past the shield that the warrior held out in battle. It was the final piece of protection, and the very reliable against the swords and blows being taken against the soldier.

God in his everlasting wisdom, made the breastplate for our earthly armor and protection out of the strength of his everlasting love for us…. Our righteousness purchased with the sacrifice of his Son, Jesus Christ. You see, for us to stand forgiven and holy before God one day, our sins had to be paid for, and we had to receive his gift of salvation. That is why he offered us the breastplate of righteousness…. It serves as a secure protector of our very standing before the Lord, and the most important part of ourselves that God wants to protect….. Our heart.

The greatest thing about the breastplate of righteousness, is that we receive it when we give our lives to Christ (John 3:16, John 1:12), it becomes a part of our eternal dressing. The key for us to wear it means for us to fully know that what Christ did on the cross in our behalf was completely sufficient for us to one day stand fully forgiven, and fully righteous before a Holy and Loving God. Our sin will be no more because of this..
To fully enjoy our walk with God, our heavenly father, we must be equipped with the knowledge of this to endure the emotional and spiritual battles we face every day that would bring us down.

Things like failure, ridicule, harassment, embarrassment, humiliation, have no bearing on what Christ accomplished for us on that cross. He gave us righteous standing before the Creator. That is where we must stand. Confidence, not in my human capabilities, or my creativity, or steadiness…. But in Christ alone. The thought of this drives out both arrogance, and insecurity. Neither can dwell in the full awareness of what we have been afforded in Christ’s sacrifice on the cross…. Complete righteousness for all eternity…. Freedom to enjoy our lives in harmony with our Lord and Savior.

May your week be filled with the knowledge that you are richly valued by God. And that your worth is beyond measure… and that all of this is sealed before God, by the sacrifice of his Son, so that you can stand righteous before him…. His Gift to you.

The Armor of God - Christ is our belt of Truth !

(NIV) Ephesians 6:10-18
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. [11] Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. [12] For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. [13] Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. [14] Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, [15] and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. [16] In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. [17] Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. [18] And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

Settling for nothing less than fully equipped.

A new awareness and appreciation for the need of preparedness came into full view in America on September 11, 2001. As we all remember that fateful day when several airliners were hijacked and flown into American targets on American soil, resulting in thousands of deaths, and billions of dollars of loss. We fell victim to the scheming of evil men, whose plans were not revealed to us until it was too late in the suffering of the consequences. The attack prompted a whole new level of preparedness. Evidence is seen throughout our society. One only has to go to the airport, and be body scanned, patted down, interviewed, baggage checked, asked to move away from the front of the airport while waiting on a passenger, and the list goes on. Now preparedness matters because the consequences of not being prepared became very visible with consequences that were terrible. As Americans, the enemy was scheming to bring us down in ways we never suspected.

Ephesians 6:11 encourages us to completely equipped as well. The battle we face is against Satan’s scheme to destroy and kill, and bring down everything that points to God’s simple message of salvation and restoration to man. Simply put, Satan wants your hope and faith to be killed. He wants no one to truly know the power of an abiding relationship with Jesus Christ. And that battle is very real. One just has to look around to see the ravages of spiritual warfare in our country, neighborhoods, and families. Divorce rates, drug problems, sexual addictions, alcoholism, fear, insecurity, are but a few of the pictures we see of the war on our souls. There is, however a defense against these battles that is offered for everyone. It is a remedy that starts with the heart of man looking to his Creator for the help he needs. God offers his armor for everyone. With that armor we can stand and have victory in our lives. That is great news.

1. Knowing the enemy is paramount in a battle for the well being of our spiritual health and relationship to God. Paul states it so clearly that we do not battle against the people we meet, but rather our battle is against the powers of evil that exist in the spiritual realm. People are the object of God's redemptive work, and with all people God desires reconciliation to himself. That is why he sent Christ to die on the cross. John 3:16 - For God so Loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whoseoever believes on him, will not perish, but have everlasting life" In our daily lives, recognizing the enemy can keep us out of trouble.

2. The first article of armor that we are offered is the belt of truth. Real victories are only possible on a foundation of truth. Truth is freedom. John 8:32 says “ You will know the truth and the truth will set you free” In any matter, the seeking out of the truth is the first step to liberty. This is true in all aspects of life.

In John 14:6 Jesus made a claim that said "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”

That was a bold claim of authority and knowledge. Jesus had died and risen from the grave, and was making a promise to the disciples, that he was going to prepare a place for him. They had seen him have power over the cross, and had risen from the dead. Our belt of truth to protect us from blows by the enemy is the fact that Jesus Christ is in both deed and word, the center point of spiritual truth. He made exclusive claim to that fact.

I hope that as you think about the battles you face this week, you gain courage from the fact that you are not alone in them. The armor of God, which is central around Jesus Christ our Lord, is able to protect you. Next week, we are going to examine the other articles of armor offered by God for our spiritual protection and well being.

May the God of Truth bless your week in every way.

Jeff

The armor of God - Equipped for a life that matters

The armor of God - Equipped for a life that matters

Ever since the beginning of created man, there has been the struggle of good and evil in our world, our circles of relationships, and
within ourselves. God in his great wisdom, desires us to choose an
everlasting relationship with Him through Jesus Christ his son. The strength we gain by being actively engaged in this relationship gives us the foundation to live victoriously day to day. Over the next several writings, I invite you to examine the following passage from :

As if commanding a troop of soldiers not to lose hope and to be prepared for the battle ahead , Paul says

" Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. "

He, like a good leader, wanted his people to be prepared for the realities that lay ahead. He knew the most important resource that anyone could need was found in a close personal relationship with the great Creator. Without that knowledge of where there power came from, that the battles would spiritually take them under.

Jesus was given all authority in heaven and earth and it is that source of power he wants us to be equipped in before we face life victoriously. This is done with the armor of God !

A thought for the week....
You matter enough for God to offer to empower you with His strength for each day. Take him up on that offer each day. !!

God !

You are too big for me to understand
But I am invited to know you

You are too Holy for me to set eyes on
Yet you want me to seek you

You are too majestic for me to fathom
Yet you humbled yourself to poverty for me

You are from everlasting to everlasting
Yet you hear my fleeting concerns

You alone God are worthy of all praise
Yet you were scourged by a crown of thorns for my salvation.

You are the creator of everything we know Yet you call me friend and in fact your child !

There is coming a day when every knee will bend and every tongue confess that you are Lord .
Yet you wait patiently to hear me volunteer my praise today!

You are amazing God

Imagine .......

Imagine .....

Sometimes in the middle of life's busy highway it is good to pause and ponder what it will look like when we get to our final destination. What will we see when we really do see Jesus face to face. What will we feel. How will we react ? A favorite verse of mine in John is one where we are encouraged to think of that day that is coming.

I can just see the glimmer in Jesus eyes after having defeated sin and death for you saying... Just wait and see what I have for you. My task now is to go and spend my Time preparing a special place for when I bring you to meet me. He knows well the challenges we will face on our journey, but with the joy of eternal restoration, commanded us not to grow discouraged but just keep trusting in God and in Christ his only Son.

(NIV) John 14:1-4
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God ; trust also in me. [2] In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. [3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. [4] You know the way to the place where I am going."

So in keeping with taking a journey I pause to imagine my destination of meeting my savior face to face, I offer these thoughts and images of that day.

Will the joy I felt the day I found you as my savior at Clydehurst undeneath a large pine tree by the snack shack be as fresh as that day ?

Will the I feel the joy you take in my salvation ?

Will I have words to express the many thanks I have for seeing your hand in my life over and over ?

Will I truly see the enormity of your sacrifice for me when I see you in all the splendor, majesty, and power you left to redeem me?

Will I weep for the nail scars in your hands and feet on my behalf and for my sin?

Will I see the places in my life I allowed my stubbornness to miss your voice ?

Will I see those you used in my life to steer me to you ?

Will I see the gifts you truly planted in my heart ?

Will I understand your grace toward me ?

Can we walk along heaven and speak openly ?

Will I laugh outloud at the comedies in life you allowed ?

Will all my pretenses drop in humility ?

Are the streets really made of pure gold ?

There is a great worship song called "I can only imagine" sung by the group Mercy Me that grabbed my attention this week. It describes the emotion of the experience of meeting Jesus face to face.

I Can Only Imagine.

I can only imagine what it will be like when I walk by your side.

I can only imagine what my eyes will see when your face is before me. I can only imagine .....

Surrounded by your glory what will my heart feel !

Will I dance for you Jesus, or in awe of you be still...

Will I stand in your presence, or to my knees will I fall...

Will I sing hallelujah, will I be able to speak at all !

I can only imagine ...

I can only imagine ...

I can only imagine ... When that day comes and I find myself standing in the SON.

I can only imagine ...
When all I would do is forever .. Forever worship you.

I can only imagine ...

I can only imagine...

Take some time to imagine that day and may it lift your spirit and direct your path this week !!

Jeff

Reflections and Resolutions

The year has passed with its many resolutions,

The steps we took and deeds we planted

Are now the foundation of our reflections….

So the questions I must ask

I pray to God will shape my tasks

Did I see my neighbor with love ?

Did I hear your voice from above ?

Did I think about Your Word to Us ?

Did I revel in your mercy in the cross ?

Did my life move closer your Son ?

Did I demonstrate to others, You are the only one ?

Were the trials that came my way weathered with Grace ?

Were the Joys you gave, received with praise ?

Were the prayers I prayed, lifted in humility ?

Did I serve you each day to the best of my ability ?

Were the weak around me, given my words of kindness ?

Did I slow down enough to enlighten blindness ?

Were the struggles of those you entrusted to me,

Lightened and lifted with your love for them to see ?

Were the hopes and dreams you have planted
Supported with giving of the resources you granted ?

And so I start another year and consider my resolutions

I ask that you touch my heart with this year’s solutions.

To pursue first your kingdom here on earth

So that all those around me, will understand their worth

And to live each day before your throne

Until my work on earth is done.

Psalm 19:14

May the words of my mouth and the mediations of my heart, be acceptable in your sight, Oh Lord, my strength and redeemer.

Jeff
